The tortoise represents the main supportive feature in land form Feng Shui. The tenacity and resoluteness of this creature symbolizes the patience that is necessary in obtaining our goals in life. The tortoise is also known for its longevity and thus brings vitality to the land. King Fu Xi, a great Shaman and leader of the Fu XI tribe, contributed many advance theories to civilization at that time including animal taming, geometry and astronomy. Ancient Chinese legend tells us that Fu XI discovered interesting mathematical markings on a mystical horse that rose from the River Ho. These markings described the forces that drive the universe (yin and yang) and depicted the Ho Tu river map and Earlier Days Ba-gua. Later, Yu the great was said to have witness strange markings inscribed on the back of a giant tortoise shell. These markings became the Lo Shu square that unlocked the secrets to the Pa Kua. The tortoise shell is said to conceal all the secrets of heaven and earth. The 9 numbers inscribed on the shell are arranged in an order that the numbers add up to 15 whether vertical, horizontal or diagonally. Fifteen is the number of days it takes the moon to complete one waxing and waning cycle. It is the number of longitude degrees sunlight travels across the earth in one hour and a host of other phenomena. The Lo Shu square became the basis for Feng Shui principles, the 8 trigrams, five elements and compass directions. Placing a tortoise land feature or symbol to the north direction or back of your home will bring stability, support and tenacity into your life.

Mary Jane Kasliner is the director and instructor for the Teaching Tortoise School of Feng Shui. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science from Skidmore College and an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences. Her studies also include a Certification from the D’Amicis School of Western Feng Shui, Flying Star compass School methods from the New York School of Feng Shui under the direction of world- renowned master Roger Green, Certification in Advance Theories of Four Pillars Eastern Astrology with the New York School of Feng Shui under the tutelage of Yasha Jampolsky, a Certificate in Western Astrology 101 & 102 from CCA School of Astrology in Oregon, Certification in Key Concepts of True Feng Shui, Business Feng Shui, Earth Acupuncture, Dowsing, 9 Star Ki, Flying Star, & I Ching from the Feng Shui Institute in London under the direction of Alan Stirling. Mary Jane’s studies also include dowsing and earth alignment where she has corresponded with David Cowan from England along with the Feng Shui Institute in London. Mary Jane is also trained in space clearing ceremonies, the art of Qi gong and Nationally certified in Hatha Yoga.

Mary Jane brings her in depth training and knowledge to Teaching Tortoise School of Feng Shui where she uses a combination of power point visuals and hands-on methods to teach Classical and Form school feng shui, as well as space clearing and earth energy work. Students will have the opportunity to apply these theories to their personal floor plans and will progress to perform professional consultations.
